Gleisson Balen, M.Sc.
Electrical Engineer with Master Degree at Power Electronics and Control for Electric Vehicles Fast Chargers
About
Enthusiastic about electric vehicles, static converters, power electronics and fast chargers.
I have accomplished a Master's Degree at the Federal University of Santa Maria – UFSM, Brazil, in Power Electronics and Control. The project entitled “Development of a DC Fast Charge Station with Energy Storage Element for Electric Vehicles” has received the 1st place at IEEE IAS 2018 Master Thesis Contest.
I graduated in Electrical Engineering in January 2015 at UFSM. During my under-graduation, I took part in the exchange program Science without Borders. For one year, I studied engineering and English disciplines at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. In addition, I developed research activities with fast chargers for electric vehicles at Concordia University and performed a capstone project on the same subject at UFSM.
In 2019, I worked as a substitutive electrical engineering professor and developed weekly laboratory classes in the fields of electrical machines, transformers, building installation, and electronics. In concomitance, I worked as an IEEE UFSM Student Branch Chair and IEEE IAS UFSM SB Chair. As a result of our dedication, we received the IAS Outstanding Chapter Award 2020.
Moreover, for two years 2015 to 2018, I worked as a teacher at the Industrial Technical College of Santa Maria – CTISM. I taught theoretical and practical classes for Industrial Automation, Electrical Installations Projects, Digital Circuits, Electrical Maintenance, Programmable Controllers, and Basic Electricity courses.
My professional experience also includes an internship in 2014 at Bruning Tecnometal Ltd. - a large metallurgical company that employs almost 2 000 employees - with activities in automation projects and in industrial machinery and electronic devices maintenance.

Papers and Conferences

IECON 2019, Lisbon, Portugal
Optimum Geometric Carrier-Based Modulation for NPC and T-Type Inverters
This paper describes a simple optimum carrier-based geometrical modulation for both NPC and T-Type inverters. The current that flows through the midpoint of the DC bus can be controlled in order to balance the capacitor voltages for a wide range of modulation indexes and power factors.

SOBRAEP 2019, Brazilian Power Electronics Magazine
Fast Charger Station with Energy Storage Element and Harmonics Active Filter for Electric Vehicles
This paper proposes a modular fast charge station with an active power filter and energy storage element for electric vehicles. The proposed charging station is composed of 10 charging points of power up to 60kW each. The active power filter is analyzed, designed, and presented to reduce current harmonics on the electrical grid side. In addition, a stability analysis due to converters connection is performed.

ECCE and IAS Annual Meeting 2017, Cincinnati, USA
Receiving the IAS CMD Outstanding Chapter Award 2017
The UFSM Student Branch received the Outstanding IAS Chapter 2017 award in New Chapter category.

COBEP 2017, Juiz de Fora, Brazil
Modeling and Control of Interleaved Buck Converter for Electric Vehicle Fast Chargers
This paper describes in details a three leg interleaved buck converter designed to electric vehicle fast charge stations. Theoretical results are validated in a hardware in the loop (HIL) implementation.

Combustion Analysis of a Diesel Engine Using Computer Simulation
This paper describes the analysis of combustion performance of a Diesel engine normally used on generator sets. A detailed heat release analysis is performed through one-dimensional simulation software and experimental results, enabling a comprehensive description of combustion parameters of the engine through a simplified study.

COBEP 2011, Natal, Brazil
FC and PV Emulation by Buck Converter Based on Experimental VxI Curves and Dynamic Response
This paper presents an emulation of fuel cell and photovoltaic modules based on the buck converter as a replacement of actual power sources for bench tests. This approach is suitable for power electronic designs involving power converters to interface source and DC loads or source and mains grid, without having available the real source.
